This is a purvakarma to Panchakarma a compleate body massage with medicated oils that results in decreased stress, removal of dead skin lyayeres, increased peripheral blood circulation, toning muscles, and also work as body and mind relaxer.
In this therapy, medicated oils are used to massage the whole body. The process of anointing oil to the body is different in this procedure as compared to the process in Abhyangam. The therapist are trained enough to study the patient’s body condition and accordingly address the stressed parts of the body. Doctor’s consultation is not required for otherwise healthy person because the therapists are well versed with the musculature of the body and can handle simple spasm or strained muscles. Shiroabhyangam focuses on head, face, and neck, the areas which happen to be the commonest and most vulnerable to stress and tension. Massaging the head from time to time brings about a state of calmness, positivity, and tranquility. The Ayurvedic texts have indications of daily oil application on the head, particularly on the crown and ears before bath and head bath with plain water for a healthy living. The oil is kept on the crown (adhipati) for a while. Coconut oil is the widely used oil for head anointing. One can find hundreds of coconut based medicated ayurvedic hair oils for application and massage. Oils are made as per the condition of the patient for eg. Migraine, sinusitis, dental ache and problems, eye disorders, ear disorders, bad breath, insomnia, and mental illnesses.
